Saint Kitt's Island

The island of Saint Kitt's, also formally known as Saint Christopher Island, is located in the eastern Caribbean. The shores are caressed with both white and black sandy beaches. The island is rather small, at about 65 square miles, but boasts views of neighboring islands such as Saint Maarten's and Saint Bart's. The Capital is Basseterre, where cruise ships are known to dock. For centuries, Saint Kitt's has relied on their monoculture of sugar as a source of income. The island started out as a tobacco producing nation, but this meant heavy competition with the Virginian Colony. They later switched to sugar in 1640. Unfortunately, the sugar industry was shut down recently in 2005, making the island depend heavily on tourism to keep their economy running smoothly.
